General help on the biorhythm program Alt-H

Use arrows and Page Up/Page Down to move around in these help windows.

Ctrl-Page Up moves til start of text.
Ctrl-Page Down moves to end of text.
Esc closes the window.

This general help is a collected text containing many of the context
sensitive help texts you get when you press F1 (so you have the possibility
of reading them together instead of in small pieces).
You can also print this help text (from the DOS prompt) by typing
PRINT EHELP.TXT and pressing [Enter].

ķ The F1 key gives "context sensitive
F1 help" i.e. help on what you are
ͼ doing right now. So if you press F1
while on a certain menu item or in a certain
dialog window, you will get help on that menu
 or dialog.

 The Biorhythm theory

The biorhythm theory is mainly based on a large statistical material.
There are three classical curves in the biorhythm calendar: the physical,
the psychical (or emotional), and the intellectual. The duration of a
cycle of a curve is 23, 28 or 33 days, respectively. When these curves are
above the middle line (i.e. to the right on the graph), you have extra
energy, and when they are "down" i.e. to the left on the graph), you have
low energy in the areas in question. When a curve crosses the midline, you
call it a "critical day", where you may be instable and out of balance in
the respective fields (physically, emotionally or intellectually). If
several curves crosses the midline simultaneously, you have to be extra
careful and take your precautions.

If two curves cross each other below the midline (cross combinations),
it is not as serious as a critical day, but has some influence.

A biorhythmical "day and night" starts 12 hours before you birth time of
day, and ends 12 hours after that hour.

Please see the litterature for further elaboration of the subject.

 Litterature

Hugo Max Gross : Biorhythmik. Hermann Bauer

                   with Your Life Cycles.

 The correspondance of two
 persons' biorhythms

When you choose "Two persons" in the menu, you can choose "Sympathy
quotients" or "Parallel curves".

Sympathy quotients Alt-Y: View F8: Print

are also shown graphically. 100% is identical rhythms. 0% is out of phase.
(When one is on top, the other is at bottom). This has importance when
evaluating the cooperating of two persons in a particular area (physical/
emotional/intellectual).

Parallel curves F6: View F9: Print

means that you can see two biorhythm charts side by side, and that you can
immediately see which days the persons are in harmony and which days they are
not. If two persons have a general bad harmony, say on the emotional curve -
the best moments for cooperation in this area will be when the two curves are
moving towards the midline (but before the critical days).

Multi Analysis Alt-M: View Alt-A: Print

With multi analysis 16 persons will be shown. These 16 persons must be
already be entered. You can see critical days, top and bottom of curves and
see whether the curves are below or above the midline. When you View the
multi analysis you can get a Legend. When you Print multi analysis there are
three different print methods (illustrated on screen). Further, the item .
"Special characters on printer" in the window Print options
also plays a role here. Please try the different options on your printer.

If you want to change the order of persons, so that you can have 16
particular persons for one multi analysis, you can change the names, for
instance letting them start with hyphen, then sort according to names, and
all the persons starting with a hyphen will be together.
Another group may begin with [space] etc.

Only the first three characters of the name are shown in the heading of the
multi analysis. So you might enter the names thus:

   TW TOM WILSON

If there are two critical days just after each other (on the same curve),
e.g. 2 "P"s, et means that the critical point is right between two days.

 AN EXAMPLE OF USE: DRIVERS

Biorhythms have often been used in planning transport firms, where the
number of accidents according to many investigations can be lowered. In
general all critical days should be treated with care, but special conditions
may play a part.

One research thus showed that 3 kinds of curves had particular bad
influence on the driving abilities of drivers: 1) a psychic crisis going down
(the curve going down), 2) a physical crisis going up, and 3) a cross
combination of the physical and the psychic curve below the midline. (Source:
Alice Laursen: Politikens bog om biorytmer, 1990 (Danish)).

Concerning the further interpretation of critical days etc., please see the
litterature.

Multi Analysis is only available in the Professional edition. You can print
an order form if you want to order the Professional edition. Type (from the
DOS prompt) ORDER to print the order form.

 Full and new moons

The moon has influence on the mind (on some more than others).

On full and new moons there is statistically a greater frequency of murder,
violence, suicide, etc. Full and new moons are suitable for meditation etc.
A light diet is recommended. Thus you can benefit from taking the full and
new moons into account.

In the biorhythm chart the moons are marked thus

    F Full moon
    N New moon

When you for the first time ask for a chart for a particular year, the
program first has to calculate the moon phases. Then the information is
stored till next time. On the disk are probably information for "this year".

If you choose very old dates (e.g. before 1800), the moon phases may not be
exact.

General help on use of the biorhythm program

The menu items on the top line of the screen may be reached by pressing
simultaneously the Alt-key and the first letter. Mouse may also be used.

In the submenus you can use arrows or the enhanced letters to execute the
individual items. Hotkeys may be conntected to these items. For instance,
Alt-L is a hotkey to generate a list of persons. You can use the hotkeys
outside the menus. A "" sign in a submenu indicates further submenus.

In a help window (like this) there may be enhanced words that lead to
other help windows. Use the Tab key to go to an enhanced item. The Shift-Tab
combination moves "backwards". Press the Enter key to display help on the
item in question (or click twice with the mouse on the enhanced item).

You can "zoom" a window to full screen and back to "normal" size with the
F5 key (or click with the mouse on the "zoom icon" in the upper right
corner of the window).

If you want to move or resize the window (in smaller steps than "zoom"),
you can press Ctrl-F5. Then the arrows will move the window, and the arrows
with SHIFT pressed will resize the window. With the mouse you click on the
bottom right corner and "drag" to the desired size. Click on the top edge
of the window to move it.

Press Esc when you finish looking at a window (or click on the "close icon"
in the upper left corner of the window).

                ķ
If there is an OK -"button" in a win-
dow, you can ͼ click with the
mouse on it to accept the contents of the
window, or press [Enter] which has the same
effect). (Of course this does apply, if you
have moved to the [Cancel]-button and press
 [Enter] there).

                ķ
If there is a Cancel -"button" in a win-
dow, you can ͼ click with the
mouse on it to leave the window (and ignore
the contents). Pressing [Esc] has the same
 effect.

So, as a rule of thumb:
 ķ ķ
   OK Press Enter
 ͼ ͼ
 ķ ķ
  Cancel Press Esc
 ͼ ͼ

 Hotkeys

 "Dialog windows"

In "dialog windows" there may be different items you have to fill in or
answer. In general:
 ķ
Tab is used to move between the differ-
ͼ ent "fields" in the dialog window.
 ķ ķ
  Shift + Tab moves "backwards".
 ͼ ͼ
If some letters are enhanced, you can move directly to the corresponding
fields by pressing the Alt-key and enhanced letter simultaneously.

                ķ
If there is an OK -"button" in a win-
dow, you can ͼ click with the
mouse on it to accept the contents of the
window, or press [Enter], which has the same
 effect.
                ķ
If there is a Cancel -"button" in a win-
dow, you can ͼ click with the
mouse on it to leave the window and ignore
the contents. To press [Esc] has the same
 effect.

 So:
 ķ ķ
   OK Press Enter
 ͼ ͼ
 ķ ķ
  Cancel Press Esc
 ͼ ͼ

With a mouse you can click on just about anything in sight.

The different types of fields are:

1) Text, e.g. names, example:

  Name:

Write the text and edit it. Arrows, [Backspace], [Home], [End] and
[Insert] may be used. Press [Enter] to accept the content of the field, or
[Esc] to quit the field unchanged.

2) "Radio buttons" - multiple choice, where there is only one possibility:

 Example: Sorting
 ( ) Name
 () Birthday
 ( ) Age

You move to an option by moving the "dot" by the arrow keys. Press [space]
to select the item. You can also press simultaneously the Alt-key and the
enhanced letter.

3) "Check box" lists. Here you can "check" as many or few options as you
like. Example:

 Print Options:
[ ] Pause at New Page
[X] Help text to be printed first
 [X] Special characters on printer

As with the "radio buttons" you move by the arrows and select/deselect by
the [space] key.

 Mouse

 ķ
A mouse is used by clicking with
the left mouse button on menu
items. You can drag the mouse to
            submenu items (click and hold
down the button while the mouse
ͼ is moved the desired submenu
 item, then release the button).

In windows you can enlarge/decrease ("zoom") the window by clicking on
the "zoom icon" in the upper right corner. You can close the window by
clicking on the "close icon" in the upper left corner (the same result is
is obtained by pressing Esc). If there is a "resize icon" in the bottom
right corner of a window you can change size of the window in small steps
by dragging the corner. You move a window by dragging the top edge of the
window.

If there are one or two scroll bars in a window, there is also an "elevator"
showing your position in the text. You can click below or above the elevator
to move up or down, or you can drag the elevator.

In "dialog windows" you can click the mouse on the relevant items.

 Add / Edit / Delete Person F2 F3
      Ctrl-Del

A new person may be added to the list and inserted automatically in the
chosen sorting order. Later you can edit, i.e. change name and/or
address. Finally you can delete the person. The sorting chosen will be
kept until a new is chosen.

At the close of the program all persons will be stored in the file
PERSONS.DAT. The storing will not take place until the
end of the program session, so please remember always to finish "properly"
by hitting Alt-X (don't shut down the computer in mid-session).

 Storing of persons

At the start of a program session, the names and birthdays of persons are
read from the file PERSONS.DAT. If this file does not exist, a new "empty"
data file is created. When the program is terminated, names and
birthdays of all persons are stored with possible changes. There is room
for 200 persons in the data file. If you need more, you can have several
data files (rename PERSONS.DAT to some other name, and then a new "empty"
data file will be created next time you run the program).

The file PERSONS.DAT on the original disk contains data of historical
persons. If you have an older version of the biorhythm program, you can
use your data from this version, by using your "old" PERSONS.DAT instead
of the version on the original disk.

 Storing of various data

Various data are stored ready for next time you use the program, in the
file BIO4.DAT. The following information is stored:

Special characters on printer or not
Sorting field: name, birthday or age
Number of lines from top to bottom of paper
Pause at new page or not
Guidance text to be printed before
   biorhythms (file GUIDE.TXT)
 Sound on/off
 Certain other internal data

The file BIO4.DAT is created the first time you run the program: it is not
on the original disk. So if you copy the shareware edition of the program
to others, please DO NOT copy this file.

 List of persons Alt-L: View
     Ctrl-PrintScr: Print

A list of stored persons may be had on screen or printer.
They will be in the sorting order you have chosen (or which the program
is "born" with: alphabetical sorting of names.

 Sorting Alt-S

The persons may be sorted according to 3 criteria:

 () Name (alphabetically)
( ) Birthday (not year) (birthday list!)
( ) Age (birthday and year)

Use the arrows and the [space] key to select/deselect an option in the
() brackets.

When a sorting criterion has been chosen the persons will be sorted in this
order automatically - also next time you run the program.

 Print options

Use the Tab key to move from one field to another. Shift-Tab moves
"backwards". Use the [space] key to select/deselect a possibility
in the check boxes.

Number of days: the number of days to display/print the biorhythms.

Lines from top to bottom of paper (often 66): Usually not necessary to
worry about, as a new method of changing page has been introduced in
version 4.50: Form feed instead of line counting. If you should want to use
to "old" method, start the program by typing BIO LI.

Pause at new page: e.g. with single-sheet printers.

Print help text first: The file GUIDE.TXT is printed before the biorhythms.
(This is an ordinary ASCII text file which you can edit yourself).

Special characters on printer: some printers (e.g. type wheel printers)
do not have access to the full set of IBM's "graphic" characters (e.g.
vertical line). If the print looks strange, you should deselect Special
characters. Sometimes the printing becomes slower with special characters,
even though they exist. (Try both possibilities on your printer).

Filename: This should ONLY be entered if you want print to a file instead
of to a printer. A file may afterwards be edited in your own text editor
(as an ordinary ASCII text file).

The following printer choices are stored on disk (in the file BIO4.DAT)
until next time you run the program:

    Lines top/bottom of paper
    Pause at new page
    Guidance is printed first
    Special characters on printer

 Survey of command line parameters

There are some parameters you can give from DOS when you start the program.
They may be combined (there should just be a space between them all, e.g.
BIO U IP.

BIO U Skip start screen (the one with the
         graphic curves).
BIO IP No pause when viewing graphs on
screen. (May be stopped with the
[Pause] key and resumed with the
         [space] key).
 BIO M Monochrome (black/white) display
(even though you have color screen).
Affects only a part of the program.
BIO F Full and new moons are NOT displayed.

 Memory

In the bottom right corner you can see how much memory is available at
the moment (in bytes). (The available memory will change as you use
different program functions).

 Time and date

Please note that European date format can be had by typing BIO EU when
starting the program (see also program line parameters).

 Entering of various data

 Entering of dates

Dates are entered with space between month, day and year
(day, month and year, if European date format is used).

   Example: 12 27 92 (or European date format: 27 12 92)

Please note that you don't have to write '19' before the year. (If you want
dates years 1-99 write 21 in front, i.e. 2101 for year 01. (The moon phases
may not be exact here)).

If there is already a date in the date field, it is the date today, and you
only have to press [Enter] to accept it, or press [right arrow] and edit
the date, or enter a new date.

 Entering a new person

The name must not be "empty". The letters will automatically be made
into upper-case letters.

The birth date must be entered as e.g. 12 31 62
(or 12 31 1962). Use [space] between month, date and year. It is not
necessary to write the '19' before the year.

If European date format has been chosen, birth date must be entered
as e.g. 31 12 62.

See also {dialog windows:dialog.

 Search for a person

When you search for a person who is stored, you may just write a part of the
name, e.g. "to" or "wi" if you search for "Tom Wilson". You can write with
small or capital letters as you like.

1st person's No (with multi analysis)

Usually No. 1 is used here. Then the first 16 persons of the person list are
shown. If you have several groups, you may have to enter 17 to get group 2,
etc. (Please see further under multi analysis on how to group persons
by using the alphabetic sorting).

                     --------oooOOO0OOOooo---------

This help text may be printed from DOS by typing PRINT EHELP.TXT and pressing
Enter.
